SEM Solution For Dynamic Content
by Rob Garner
For dynamically served pages, there are many important SEM techniques for proper search
design and maintenance. An optimized dynamic site utilizing .ASP, .PHP, and other
platforms can have a staggering impact on search engine result pages in Yahoo!, Google,
Altavista, Inktomi, and all other major engines in a relevantly short period of time.
Leave Your Door Open, and They Will Come In
At the most basic level, the doors should be open for spiders to crawl through a
dynamic site. A site map of all key pages and subjects is a simple way to open your
content to a search engine spider or crawler. Links should be visible on your front page
in a prominent spot, and also be a part of your navigation bar.
Each page of a dynamic site should also have a clear definition of the page's content,
usually a 2-4 word keyword phrase. This phrase should reflect the page's unique content,
and be placed in the title, header tags, and text body.
Clicking Through a Dynamic Site
A user should also have the ability to manually click through all of a site's
dynamic content, without the aid of the site's search function. Though it may seem like a
monumental task at first, there many methods of linking every page of a site, from 100
pages to a million pages. Recognizing these links within the site not only ensures user
navigation, but it also ensures that the search spiders can find all of the site's
content.
The Vast Majority of Dynamic Web Content Has Not Been Indexed
The truth is that most of the internet's dynamic content has not been indexed, due to most
crawler's favoring of HTML and text-based websites. Contrary to what many believe,
spiders, crawlers, and indexers do not ignore dynamically served content. They do ignore
sites that are not properly set up for the search engine to read them. But if your dynamic
site is open for the search engines to crawl through, you are in the Top 3% of all sites
that utilize the full power of search engine marketing and optimization.
